My No Ma(y)ke-up Challenge

IJSBS0EFPO.jpg

This is crazy, but I’m doing it.  Today, as I was reflecting, I thought about how it would be really great if I spent less money.  My husband doesn’t mind when I buy makeup, skin, and hair products whenever I get the urge, but sometimes, I do.  He is always so careful to not splurge on himself, but since I consider makeup a “necessity” of life, I don’t really think I’m splurging on myself when I buy makeup.  But I kinda am.  If I didn’t have a nice bountiful collection of makeup, I might feel differently.  But you guys know the truth.   I buy.  I spend.  I haul.  So in honor of the fact that I appreciate how my husband isn’t a splurger, I’m going to try it out for a month too.

I’m still going to wear makeup for all of May, if that’s what you’re wondering.  But, my No Ma(y)ke-up challenge is that FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH OF MAY, I WON’T BUY ANY *NEW* MAKEUP PRODUCTS.  The little unimportant asterisks around the word ‘new’ are because if I run completely out of a product I wear daily, I wouldn’t consider replacing it to be splurging.  But what I’m NOT going to be buying is “the latest shade of Milani blush” or “that eyeliner that I saw on that one Youtuber’s video” or 5 new shades of nail polish just because.

*GASP*  Surely saving money can’t be a big enough of a motivation to give up buying makeup this month.  NO WORRIES PEOPLE, IT’S NOT THE ONLY REASON.  Of course, a big benefit to this will be saving money for our summer trips, anniversary gifts, and potential moving costs.  But my secret motivation is that I want to focus LESS on makeup and MORE on skincare and hair.

I think having beautiful skin and amazing hair would be lovely.  I want to spend more time on my skin this month, and less time on covering it up with makeup.  *Again, NO WORRIES, I will still be wearing makeup all month*  But I recently bought a facial steamer, and some radiance serum, and I’m just getting really excited about focusing my attention on my skin.  And my hair.  I will be getting a new serum from my salon this week and I couldn’t be more excited.  I also switched shampoo/conditioner brands and have been loving it.  I really feel like my hair and my skin deserve some special, undivided attention.

And so…in the spirit of saving my money and imitating my husband’s self-restraint, I am dedicating all my beauty energy in May to taking care of my skin and my hair.  I’ll let you know at the end of May how it all went, what I learned, and what products helped me in my journey!! Until then, wish me luck!  And comment below if you’d like to join me in my “No Ma(y)ke-up Challenge!”

Post Exchange Beauty Haul

IMG_20160420_144956

The other day my husband needed to buy some new Army boots, and so my baby and I accompanied him to the PX.  To also get makeup.  For anyone who hasn’t heard about it, the PX (formally titled “The Post Exchange”) is basically the Target of the military world.  It is a store located on military bases that has house goods, clothing, makeup, electronics, toys, etc.  The stores vary from location to location in how much they stock, but some even have a nice outdoor/garden section and furniture options!  The basic idea of the PX is that since military families often (read: SUPER often) end up in the middle of nowhere, the Post Exchange carries a lot of good brands and options to make up for the possible (read: SUPER OFTEN) deficit of “good stores.”  My PX carries brands like Michael Kors, Bath and Body Works, Clinique, Smashbox, and even Vera Bradley.   I totally love it!

Anyway, I was running low on foundation this week.  As in, the DAY that I was going to visit family and my alma mater for an alumni event, my foundation squeezed out its LAST PUMP.  <– that was BAD TIMING, people.  But of course, there is no such thing as picking up one beauty product, and so at the end of my PX trip, I had acquired a nice little haul.

IMG_20160420_145113

L’Oreal Infallible in Amber Rush.  I had been meaning to get this ever since I watched a beauty video by iheartmakeup92.  This tutorial to be exact.  She said it was so beautiful and she was right!

Victoria Secret Lip Scrub in Strawberry Fizz.  I have the Victoria Secret Lip balms, but never have tried the sugar scrub.

IMG_20160420_145429

NYC Shimmer polish in Skyline Shimmer.  I wanted to get a light/beige color and this one had a shimmer to it.

IMG_20160420_145355

Wet n’ Wild polish in Sparked.  My stash of glitter nail polishes has been rapidly depleted between college and working at a ladies’ fashion store.  I needed another bottle.  This one is really close to my all-time favorite Milani glitter in Disco Lights.

IMG_20160420_145529

Double Duty by Sally Hansen.  I had to pick up a base coat…  because I needed something to put under those two polishes. lol

IMG_20160420_150415-2

Triple Moisture Shampoo by Neutrogena.  My hairdresser said that she feels like my hair was screaming for moisture.  I thought that was odd considering my current shampoo specifically says ‘moisture’ on it.  At the same time though, I wasn’t surprised considering my shampoo is a grocery store brand (Kirkland). haha <– and that’s not Kirkland as in the furniture store (I’m not THAT crazy) it’s Kirkland as in the Costco brand).

IMG_20160420_150451

Triple Moisture Conditioner by Neutrogena.  Because mis-matched shampoos and conditioners are annoying.  So is the fact that I always have half a bottle of shampoo left when my conditioner runs out.  Anyone else?  #longhairproblems?

IMG_20160420_145037

Foundation.  Because let’s not forget the whole reason I walked through the makeup aisle.  0:)  It’s the Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse in Natural Ivory 30.  This was definitely a lighter shade than I had last time, but that’s okay because I couldn’t find my original shade and because it had actually been a little too dark for me.

It was a fun trip and I’m excited to use all of my new items!  Have you tried any of these products, and did you like them?

Spring Wishes

IMG_20160317_180341122_HDR

Hello my lovely readers!  I’m sure that I’m not the only girl who makes mental lists of what she wants to buy.  I have had a running list of makeup I want to try ever since I started watching youtube videos by makeup gurus.  Fortunately, I have gone out and purchased some of said items.  And I’ve even written posts about them: like my ALL-TIME FAVORITE MASCARA.  But I can never quite keep up with my list, and the “to-purchase” list is always longer than the “purchased” list!  Ugh.  I can’t keep up.  But then again, if that is my only problem in life, I’m happy about that. hahaha Okay, so here is my latest Spring Wishes list:

  1. L’Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow: Amber rush, Endless Pearl
  2. Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadow: In the Spotlight, Fortune Teller, High Wire, ETC!!!!!
  3. A cheetah print Z palette, because see above.
  4. Maskcara IIID Foundation (not sure what colors yet…)
  5. NYX HD Finishing Powder: Banana
  6. Physician’s Formula Happy Booster Pressed Powder
  7. Victoria Secret Lip Scrub
  8. Laneige Water Sleeping Mask
  9. Burt’s Bees Radiance Serum
  10. Aria Starr Beauty Organic Argan Oil

I have a sinking feeling that what I purchase this Spring will have very little to do with what’s ACTUALLY on this list. BUT, that doesn’t change my feelings on posting this.  It’s still all the makeup I WANT, even if I don’t end up getting it. 🙂  Check back for my Summer Wishes to see what makes it back on the list. haha

And PS. if you have a suggestion of a makeup/skincare item that I need to try, let me know in the comments below!!

Empties: Winter Edition

IMG_20160317_143904.jpg

Today is the last day of winter!  I had such a nice, long, cozy one– filled with fireside Christmas music, warm frosted cookies, many many cups of coffee, and a whole new skincare regime!  To celebrate the ending of a great season, I thought I would do a product empties post.  This is my roundup of products that I used up (“empties”) during this winter.  It takes me quite a while to go through things, because I often like to rotate through what I use.  So, the list isn’t incredibly long, but here it is!

IMG_20160317_142414337

Mary Kay Botanical Effects Moisturizer.

I used to use primarily Mary Kay products.  But they aren’t as easy to get as other brands because they don’t have that IMPULSE STOREFRONT SITUATION.  I still like their skincare line, but I have moved on to mostly Burt’s Bees Skincare (at least for the moment) and so won’t be repurchasing this.  I did like that it was from their Botanics line, and I did find it to be a very pleasant moisturizer that seeped well into the skin but was still lightweight.

IMG_20160317_145439

Burt’s Bees Radiance Toner

As I said, I have moved to using mostly Burt’s Bees when it comes to skincare.  Which is not a bad thing at all.  This toner is amazing!  It is gentle and fresh and makes my skin feel rejuvenated.  It’s not your “average Sea Breeze minty fresh toner” but it’s pretty wonderful in it’s own way!  I repurchased this product.

IMG_20160317_144304

Olay Daily Facials Cloths

These are the face cloths that I use every night to wash my face and remove makeup.  They are small square paper towels that have dried soap embedded in them.  All you have to do is run it under warm water and the cloth gets soapy and bubbles on your skin.  I have tried moistened towelettes similar to these (except you don’t need to add water to them) and I have found them pretty ineffective in comparison.  However, these cloths work AMAZINGLY.  On the package, it says that they exfoliate, but I definitely don’t feel like they are rough or scratch my skin.  It also says they hydrate and tone, which they probably do, but I still like to use an additional toner and moisturizer.  They leave my face feeling clean and they take off all my makeup, even eye makeup!  (Bonus: they never sting my eyes!)  Always a repurchase.

IMG_20160317_142251978

Mary Kay Liquid Eyeliner

To be honest, this is one of my top 3 most FAVORITE makeup products ever.  Ever.  Ever.  Ever. I wore it the night I met my now-husband then-crush.  I wore it on our Wedding Day.  I wore it literally (HONESTLY) every single day for 6 years.  There is no comparison to this product.  And it is discontinued.  And this was my last bottle.  Words cannot express…

IMG_20160213_170832

Maybelline Define-A-Line Eye Liner

Okay, you all KNOW how  I feel about this eyeliner.  Enough said.  Oh, but this color was like “802 soft black” I believe, and that’s not my preferred color.  Still used it up though.  😀  It’s that good.  A TOTAL repurchase, just not in this color.

_20160114_144804-2

L’Oreal Telescopic Carbon Black Mascara

AND THEN THERE IS THIS PRODUCT IN MY LIFE.  And you know how I feel about it.  100% amazing.  And duh, a repurchase.  Try a re-re-re-repurchase.

IMG_20160317_142311160.jpg

It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In

Last but not least, there is this superb hair product that I literally can’t recommend enough!  It’s really a 10.  Haha, get it?  Okay moving on.  You need this product in your life.   For obvious reasons.  I don’t care what kind of hair type you are…(okay, actually, I do care–it’s actually really interesting and important) but seriously, EVERYONE needs this product.  I repurchased this.

IMG_20160317_143949.jpg

And that’s a wrap!  Let me know in the comments below what your most loved/used product was this winter!  I’d love to add it to my spring collection.

Thanks for reading!

Miracle Leave-In

IMG_20160308_125257113

Product review– on my favoritest hair brand ever!  Today I’m reviewing the It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In product.  Because, <3.

It’s thickened white spray with a delicious floral smell that literally turns your hair into HAIR PERFECTION.  It is typically used on wet hair, and dare I say it’s more effective that way? Hair follicles that have just been washed in warm water are “opened”and so they absorb products better.  But if need be, you can use this on dry hair.

It promises to do 10 things:

  1. Repair dry, damaged hair
  2. Add shine
  3. Detangle
  4. Control frizz
  5. Seal and protect hair color
  6. Prevent split ends
  7. Stop hair breakage
  8. Create Silkiness
  9. Enhance natural body
  10. Flat Iron spray and thermal protectant

And it does.  It literally does EVERYTHING it promises.  (Side note:  my hair is not dyed, so I can’t vouch for #5.  And I don’t use heat products on my hair, so I can’t vouch for #10.  But if it promises to do 8 things and totally delivers, I have a hunch that it can do those other two things!)

IMG_20160308_125325446

There are four variations of this–the “Lite,” “Blonde,” Plus Keratin,” and “Silk.”

*INSERT MINI-REVIEW ON THE KERATIN PLUS* I have tried the Keratin Plus before, and found it equally as pleasing.  The smell was a little “deeper” and mellow.  However, if your hair is not in need of a Keratin treatment, then don’t use it, because it is actually possible to over-Keratinize your hair.  Not trying to scare you.  Lol  But let’s just say, IT CAN HAPPEN.  Over-Keratinizing your hair can way it down and smother it, so only give your hair the amount it needs.  I used to think “the more Keratin the better.”  I have since mended my ways.  But all-in-all, I loved the Keratin Plus too and would recommend it!

Have you tried any the It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In, or any of its variations?

My Current Primers

IMG_20160301_213555

I’m not one of those people who are ADDICTED to primers.  I think they are helpful, and my skin feels better when they are on (or is it that I feel better about my skin when they are on…) but I still wouldn’t classify my attraction to them as an addiction.  We will save that term for the more die-hard necessities.  Like MASCARA.  And EYELINER.  I digress.

IMG_20160301_213413

My current face primer is the Maybelline Master Prime by Face Studio– and I’m using the Blur + Illuminate version.   It’s the primer I put over my toner and moisturizer, but under any foundation, concealer, highlighter, powder, bronzer, etc.   My primary reason (hehe, primary…get it?) for wearing primer is that I want a protective layer between my foundation and skin, so that the foundation clings to a sheer mask on my skin, and not my actual pores themselves.  This product does that for me, and so I have enjoyed using it.  Does it preserve your makeup for a full 24 hours?  No, but that’s not a priority for me when it comes to primers.

The FEEL:  Some primers are “silicone-y” while others are “creamy” and I find this one to be on the creamer side.  It does not leave your face tacky, and absorbs into the skin the way a moisturizer would.  On a frivolous side note, it has an ever so slight rose smell, which I love.  And the product itself is tinted pink.  Um…CUTE!  I haven’t noticed it change my skin color though, it just “illuminates” it a bit by making my skin look more fresh and blowy.

IMG_20160301_213458

My current eye primer is the Mary Kay Eye Primer.  Its scentless, dries quickly, and holds eye color on pretty well.  I have to say that I like this, but like the Maybelline, it’s not a MIRACLE product.  Depending on my eye makeup, I have still had crease lines at the end of the day, even when wearing this primer.  However, I do feel like it holds the colors on my lid better than if I wasn’t wearing it at all.  I also wouldn’t say that it makes my colors POP the way that some primers do.  It’s basically just coats my eyes to protect my pores from absorbing the oils and pigments of eye color…which is all I need it for anyways.

The FEEL: It has a thicker consistency than the Maybelline face primer, but I don’t mine because I put it on such a small part of my face that I don’t need it to spread thin.   And It’s white, not pink.  😦  But it dries absolutely clear.

All in all, would I repurchase both primers?  Yes, I would.  But would I be willing to try different primers?  Absolutely!  So leave me a comment below if you have a favorite to recommend.

Beauty Review: Bronzer

IMG_20160223_211824

Even though eyeliner and mascara are my two favorite makeup products (okay and c’mon eyeshadow is LEGIT), there is a special place in my heart for bronzer.  It was my first “face sculpting” product and I wore it when I felt “grown-up” for the first time at my graduation dinner at college. *let’s ignore the fact that I didn’t feel grown up until THE VERY END OF COLLEGE*  *we all mature differently* *some of us, not very much at all*  *this is a judgment free blog, people*

Saturday was one of those Army days when my husband had to go in at 5:30am and he came home around 11pm.  Airborne.  Whoo-hoo.  But we love it.  So, my daughter and I spent some quality mommy-baby time doing shopping on Saturday to distract us from missing daddy. I was at Tuesday Morning in the bath aisle when I discovered Physician’s Formula bronzers for only $4.99!  Totally felt like Christmas.

IMG_20160223_212314

This winter, I have been a big fan of sweaters and cable.  So I obvi had to get the cabled bronzer.  Cabled bronzer, was that even a thing before this product??  I don’t know, but what I do know is that I love it.  *excuse me while I get my inner-knitting-nerd on*  You see, there is a super cute basket-weave pattern on each end of the palette.  Running down the middle is a cute stripe of bronzer in a stockinette pattern, and beside that is a goldy-sparkle tone cabled stripe. *nerdy knitting snort*

And if that weren’t enough, let’s talk about the actual product.  The Physicians Formula Cashmere Wear bronzer.  In Light Bronzer 7337.  An Ultra-smoothing Bronzer.  With 100% Pure Cashmere Extract.  In case you haven’t heard of perfection before, let me explain what this means.  Your skin is softened and conditioned when you wear this bronzer because of the cashmere extract.  As in, your makeup nourishes your skin.  NEED I SAY MORE.  I will.  There is also Sodium Hyaluronate in it, which also moisturizes and smooths your skin.  Moral of the story: this product is a wonder product.

IMG_20160223_212059

The color.  The bronzer has an attractive brown color that is tempered with a slight grey undertone.  The fancy word for that apparently is “pearlescent” and that it helps diffuse fine lines and wrinkles.  All I know is that its the perfect color with that bronze-grey combo and creates a more natural looking shadow than those orange-based bronzers.  Side note: Don’t feel bad if you have worn a bronzer like that before.  We have all been Miss Pumpkin-Cheeks at one point or another.  (not just me…right??! halp).  There’s a time and place for everything.  Except pumpkin cheeks.

IMG_20160223_211952

Moving on.  The packaging is thoughtful too.  It’s a dark brown board box with a clear film and decorative tassel.  The palette is tightly fixed in the box, and so there are no issues with it popping out.  The bottom of the box opens up to reveal a mirror and bonus brush.   But back to the main point–THE TASSEL.

Bottom Line–This is my new all-time favorite bronzer.  Even though I will always have a special sentimental attachment to Maybelline’s Fit Me bronzer (first bronzer ever!…the one that made me feel grown up…that one)  I now have a new go-to bronzer.  I can’t imagine liking any bronzer more than this one.  But if you think you know one that could rival it, I’d love to know so leave a comment below!

Stay bronze my people!
